Phase III
Also called: SBIR Phase III, STTR Phase III, commercialization phase
Work that derives from, extends, or completes an earlier SBIR/STTR Phase I or II effort but is paid for with non-SBIR/STTR money, typically commercial sales or follow-on government contracts.
Phase III is the stage in which Phase II results move from the laboratory into the marketplace. No SBIR or STTR program funds pay for it.
In some agencies, Phase III can take the form of follow-on R&D or production contracts for products, processes or services intended for use by the US Government.
Any funding agreement for work that derives from, extends, or completes prior SBIR/STTR work must carry Phase III status and SBIR/STTR data rights. Agencies may award Phase III work to the firm on a sole-source basis.
